DIY Lazy Kate

Well, I made a trip to Lowe’s yesterday and found some supplies for my very own DIY tensioned Lazy Kate.

I had the basket. I bought 5/8″ dowel rods, cut them 10″ long and sanded the ends. They are held in place with 5/8″ grommets. The tensioning is done with round elastic and clamps to hold it in place. Total cost: $3.00. I can’t wait to try it out. The singles you see are the first half of 2oz of Shetland roving which came with my spinning kit. The first time I tried to ply singles I had no tension on them and it was a royal mess. This seems to be providing good tension on the “bobbins” so hopefully it will work much better.
Oh and I also made a PVC Niddy Noddy too!

Thanks for posting this!!! Once I finish with the BFL I’ve been spindling from time to time, this will definitely be what I do when plying.

Gotta question–I can’t find the listing for this on DIY, so I need to find out if the elastic and clamps are both sides of the basket or just the one? Thanks!

I love your DIY Lazy Kate idea. There are Dollars stores in the town which I live in and that type of basket will cost me about $1. I have have tons of dowels in my home and the rubber grommets don’t cost much. I have two Hardware Stores in my neighborhood and Tons of rubbers Bands and Binder Clips like shown in side view of your basket at work. Did you used Rubber Bands for the adding tension drive belt or a piece of hemp?
