Spend that Christmas money!

For my fibery Christmas gifts DH gave me money, and so did my Mom. I’ve just completed ordering my gifts and now have to be patient and wait for them to arrive.

Here’s what I’ve ordered so far: 1 pound of Lincoln roving and 1 pound of Brown Sheep Mill End roving. Both of these are in white so that I can practice dying also. 2 Bosworth spindles, a Midi and a Maxi. The Midi will be the same weight as my Emily spindle and the Maxi will be for heaver yarn and plying. I spoke with Sheila Bosworth on the phone to place my order and she was terrific. So nice, knowledgable and helpful. I can’t wait to get these new babies. :)

EDIT: One of my fiber orders was waiting on the front porch when I got home today! This is the order from The SheepShed Studio. One pound of Brown Sheep Mill End roving. The site doesn’t say what type of fiber it is though… but it is really soft!

Here’s how it came out of the box. The brown fiber (3oz) is a sample the company sent, my order was for the white fiber.

I’ve organized the fiber a bit and here’s what I ended up with:
One continuous piece of roving, totally clean, totally soft. It’s about 2″ in diameter and weighs 13 oz.

In this bunch there is 4oz of roving. This is not as “tidy” as the first bunch, much thicker pieces which are from 12 to 24 inches long. You can still see the crimp of the wool here too. As a fiber newbie I haven’t seen this before. It’s clean, but it appears as if it is not combed as much as the first batch. I think it can be spun just as it is though, but will require pre-drafting for sure (at least for me).

I’m in spinning heaven. The price of this roving was so cheap and I was a bit leary of what the quality would turn out to be. But I’m totally satisfied, it’s wonderful. I wanted some fiber to learn on and that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. I certainly got exactly what I was looking for. I’m going to experiment with my spinning and dying on this lot!

  1. You have got it SOOOOO bad!!!!

  2. Sherie, I’ve ordered from Sheep’s Shed before and love their stuff. Is the second picture of the roving from the big bale or was it something else? I’m really curious about that big bale, but I’m a little afraid of it, too.

  3. I order from Sheep Shed quite often. What you get sometimes is considered seconds because it’s what’s left after Lamb’s Pride does a yarn run. Those smaller bits do require either a run through a drum carder (if you have one) or just extra drafting. They all spin up and dye wonderfully.

  4. I agree - the roving that’s different will spin up just fine with a little extra drafting. Maybe spin that first! ;-)
