Resurrection of the DPN and WIPs

When I first started knitting about a year and a half ago I tried knitting socks on DPNs. It was an utter disaster. I think trying to teach myself to knit and to use DPNs without ever having seen anyone use them was just a sure set up to fail. I put the DPNs away and instead learned to knit socks using the Magic Loop and two circulars methods. For some unknown reason I decided to give the DPNs another try. And it’s working just great now. As a matter of fact, I think the finished socks look better when knitted on DPNs, of course that may just be my perceptions. But I’m enjoying this quite a bit, and it’s great to finally be able to do a skill that I couldn’t do before.

Two bobbins - on the left is Merino hand painted roving and on the right is Superwash Merino/Viscose pencil roving. I’m spinning the hand painted roving as laceweight singles and play to 2 ply it for a future lace project. The Merino/Viscose 2nd bobbin is almost finished, then I’ll 2 ply and see how it comes out. I’ll also dye that yarn when it’s finished. The pencil roving is just too thin and slippery to dye before spinning.

  1. Such lovely work, you’re giving me a complex. The Shirtwaist looks very comfortable. And Laceweight, already! Wow. Looking forward to my own pencil roving that some woman in texas told me about arriving.

  2. Congrats on the accomplishments. It’s always great to learn something new. I myself are trying myself on a toe up sock next, something I only tried once before and I wasn’t too good with the cast off.

  3. I usually use two circs for my socks, but picked up the DPN’s this time. Kinda nice! One of these days I have to try magic loop.

  4. Your work is wonderful! I’m very impressed and hope to get my first sweater done this summer.
