Hackles for $2.00

Posted on | July 18, 2007 |

Well, after googling DIY Hackles today I found a Great Site that showed how to DIY a set of hackles. I left work and went to the Dollar Store in search of plastic or metal pick combs. No luck! Went to another Dollar Store. Still no luck! Went to Big Lots. Nope, none there either! I was beginning to wonder if I was destined to make a trip to the dreaded WalMart at 4:45PM but remembered one other store near my house that just might have the needed supplies. Drug Emporium to the rescuse. But they only had two packages, each package had three picks. I immediately bought both packs and a tube of mascara. :) When I got home I discovered that DH didn’t have any C-clamps. Geez! I puttered around in his workshop and found these cool clamp things. As you can see from the pictures they work just fine. So my hackles cost me a big $2.00. Not too bad.

I took some merino samples I got from somewhere, they were roving but compressed to a hardness that was unlikely to ever be spun by me. The hackles did the job so nicely. I used a stitch marker for a diz. Now I have nicely combed and airy rovings to spin from. I also had some Corriedale roving I had dyed and the fiber was a bit compressed. So I ran that through the hackles too (the purple and yellow one), and voila! Lovely fiber all ready to spin. You’ve just gotta love DIY stuff.

The last picture is my MS3 stole after Clue 3 was completed. I’m still loving the pattern and can’t wait for the next clue.

Great idea on the hackle. I think there are actually some leftover hair picks here somewhere. I may have to try this.
