Blending & Carding

I bought 3 oz of lovely llama fiber last October at the Taos Wool Festival. It’s been sitting in the fiber stash ever since. I’ve taken it out numerous times, petted it, and lovingly placed it back in the stash again. I just couldn’t quite decide what to do with it, how to spin it. Yesterday I decided to be brave and tore off a bit, sat down and started to spin a very thin laceweight yarn. Well, I was not impressed with the results at all. No bounce, no life, nothing. I was very disappointed to say the least. I sat around wondering what to do with this rather expensive 3 oz of fiber that was just not cooperating. I finally decided to blend it with some merino fiber I have. I thought this would help with some memory and smooth out the yarn too. Out came Spike, my wonderful drum carder. After making a 50/50 blend I pulled the batt into roving and sat down again to spin. Now this is more like it! The singles are soft with just a touch of a halo. They are bouncy and will have memory too. So now I’ll finish blending and carding and plan to spin a lovely caramel colored 2 ply laceweight yarn!

  1. Interesting. I wonder if alpaca spins the same way?

  2. The blend is gorgeous, and soft as can be I’ll bet. Look forward to seeing what you’ll knit from it!
