Harp Weaving

I ran home from work and got started right away on the weaving. Don’t you just love a new craft?? I finished warping the loom and then started right in weaving. As I said, the warp and weft are both Sugar n’Cream cotton yarn. I’m using an 8 dent heddle. I think it’s going really well for a first try. But I would almost think the 10 dent heddle would have been a bit better, I think the weave on this may be a bit loose. But we’ll see after the cloths are washed and dried, that may make a big difference. I’m not doing anything in particular with this, just using stash yarn and making cloths that are approximately dishtowel size. I’ve got a copy of Betty Davenport’s Patterns and Textures for the Rigid Heddle Loom (thanks Kimberly!) and I think I’ll try using the pick up stick on a few just to see how the patterns look and to get used to using the pickup stick. This is already quite fun!

  1. I love the closeup pics. Lucky you, getting a copy of ‘Patterns and Textures’!

  2. Look at you go! Selvedges looking good and alraady for pick up work. Woo hoo. From the picutre your sett does look a little loose, however, you are right, wait til you are done and it’s washed AND ironded with a hard press (more details if you want). As Laura Fry says, “Magic Happens in the Water”

  3. Nice weaving. That is a pretty loom, too. I’m always amazed by how the density of the weave increases when the tension comes off the warp when the cloth comes off the loom.

  4. Wow!

  5. Looks good, a 10 DPI would have been too narrow. You want the warp to be able to move a bit in the heddle.
