Warping with Two Heddles

This is my first project using 2 heddles on my rigid heddle loom. I’ve taken pictures at each step to illustrate the procedure.

I used the Ashford Continuous Warp method. My warp is 4.1 yards long. I have a 10 dent heddle and will be weaving at 20 EPI. I’ll use a second heddle to double the ends. These first pictures are after sleying the heddle and winding the warp onto the back beam. If you look closely you’ll see there are 4 ends per slot.

Step two is threading the first heddle. You have 4 ends per slot to begin. Thread the heddle by taking the right end from the slot and moving it to the hole to the right of that slot. Repeat across.

The first heddle is now moved to the back set of heddle braces (now it is called the back heddle) and a new heddle is placed in the front heddle braces (now called front heddle). Taking the ends from the back heddle you thread the front heddle. The back heddle has one end through a hole and three ends through a slot. Call them A(hole end), B-C-D(slot ends). A goes through the adjacent slot on the front heddle. B also goes through the same slot. C goes through the front heddle hole. D is threaded through the next slot on the front heddle. It’s hard to see from the pictures and even harder to explain. Just jump in and try it. Here’s the link with some illustrative drawings that I used. Second Heddle Instructions.

Now I’m off to start on this project, wish me luck!!

  1. Wonderful! Your pictures and explanation are really helpful. I have two 12 dent heddles for my Flip, and will try this method next week. Thanks, Sherie!

  2. Wow, thanks for the tutorial! It makes way more sense to me than the diagrams. Can’t wait to see the finished project.

  3. Thanks for posting that! Now I am a lot less scared to try it.

  4. Wow This is great. Thanks for the pictures. I was wondering how do you organize the different colors? I cannot wrap my head around that yet, especially if I want to do double weaving, which will be colors on top and will be colors on the bottom. I guess I will have to give a try and see. Great website!
