Back to Basics & Judith MacKenzie McCuin

There has been a lot of discussion about using spindles in one of my Ravelry groups recently. It has inspired me to take out my sadly neglected hand spindles and give it another go. And, amazingly enough, this time around I’m loving the spindles. When I first got them I just couldn’t get it together and moved onto to spinning on a wheel. Now I’m having lots of fun with the spindles. I’m sure it’s because I’ve had experience on the wheel now and have a better understanding of what drafting is and how yarn is actually made from fiber. Here are some pictures of my new found love!
The first is an Emily spindle made by Adam Mielke w/some dyed corriedale fiber I had in the stash. The second picture is a Bosworth spindle with a 2 oz sample of Jacob wool.
I’m off to Albuquerque, NM on Tuesday for a 2 day dyeing class with Judith MacKenzie McQuin!!! I’m very excited to meet Judith and to learn everything I can about dyeing! No internet access while I’m away, the crazy hotel charges $9.95 per day to use their wireless network. I’ll be there 3 nights and will gladly take that $30.00 and spend on fibery goodies instead. So I’ll check back in next weekend with a full report, and hopefully some pictures too.
