Loom - Day 3

Posted on | June 19, 2009 |

I would first like to say that my DH is a man among men! He cheerfully worked most of the evening helping me with the loom assembly! Thanks, Honey! The assembly is not difficult and the instructions are well written. Both DH and I have very bad backs so all the bending and getting up and down was a bit hard on us. I think for people with good backs it would be a breeze. Should you get a kit like this I do have one suggestion - GET A BATTERY POWERED SCREWDRIVER!! The kit actually comes with a nice screwdriver but there is no way anyone could actually screw all those screws manually.

The loom is not completed yet, we just got a bit tired and decided to call it a night. Total time worked - 3 hours. We have just finished putting the harnesses together, next is to string the heddles. I decided this was a good place to stop as I want to tie some string heddles. My weaving instructor suggested this - she ties string heddles and places them between every 10 metal heddles. This gives wonderful visual cues for countings. Plus they can be used for emergency heddles in case of threading errors. I’m going to use some crochet cotton, size 10, in different colors for each harness.

I have recently gotten a HD floor loom, used, 4 shaft 42″-it was a kit for the first owner-it is a dream to use-you are going to love it! I started with an Ashford Knitter’s rigid heddle and knew I needed to expand my work. Found you on Weavolution-hope you have it up and weaving soon!
