Cotton Chenille Towels

Posted on | June 27, 2009 |

I’ve started my first real project on the loom. These will be small hand towels done as a learning tool. Warp and weft are 8/2 unmercerized cotton and cotton chenille. I changed the tie up so that I could “walk the treadles.” That is much more comfortable for me. There is a 5 yard warp so I should have tons of towels. I ran into problems right away in that I could not get a clear shed in front of the beater, but behind it the shed was clear as a bell. After googling and conferring with friends we found a reference that recommended changing the shed with the beater at the fell line. Works like a charm! I think the chenille is a bit sticky. I’m also using two shuttles and trying different ways to go from one to another. The first towel was wonky looking, the picture below is of the second towel and it’s a little better. By the time I get to the end of the warp they should look lots better. I hope.
