Keep it Simple

Keep It Simple - that’s the name of the pattern for my newly finished dishtowels. I’m pretty chuffed about the way they came out. There’s room for improvement, but overall they look pretty darn good for my 2nd loom project. Yes, I’m very humble!

The pattern is from a Handwoven eBook - Top Ten Towels on 4 Shafts. The threading was very challenging for me, but I did manage to get it done correctly. I used 8/2 unmercerized cotton - the warp was white and the wefts were purple, green and blue. 5 yard warp, 490 ends, 20 EPI. Off the loom, unwashed and hemmed they measured 38″ x 23″. Hemmed and washed they were 34.5″ x 21.5″. They are, to say the least, very generously sized! I followed the pattern directions, but I still feel they are too large. I will make them smaller next time.

Hems were an experiement for me. I hemstitched them all on the loom. On one I hand-stitched the hem, on the rest I machine stitched the hems. All hemming was done prior to washing. There is a picture comparing the hand-stitched hem to the machin stitched one. What you do think? I believe there is not that much difference and for all the time the hemstitching and hand sewing took it’s not worth it to do all that by hand. Lesson learned.

Lovely choice of pattern. ;-) They look great, Sherie! Machine-hemming all the way, baby!

When I wove mine, I thought they were “generously-sized” too - pretty darned big. My husband wondered if he was supposed to be using them as bathtowels. LOL!

Oh, they are beautiful! You did a great job. Definitely go with the machine stitched! Have you washed one yet? Wonder how much they will shrink.

Oh my! These are so lovely!

You’re making me want to look into a floor loom and weaving lessons. My rigid heddle loom just isn’t quite the same!

    Brilliant!
I love those towels. They look a lot like an traditional design in Germany - they were called “mineworkers - towels”. You can still buy them - and yes, they ARE very generously sized and brilliantly durable. “Gruben-tücher”

Sherie, you’ve made not only towels - you of course made the best kind. I love them!

Those are very lovely. And I agree with Debbie, I would machine stitch as well, I can’t tell the difference. If you wouldn’t have pointed it out, I couldn’t have told you which was which.

    Great job again :)
